Contributors

Camel’s Hump loves contributions from new people.  If you would like a write a post, please get in touch first to check that it is something that we can use.  We can’t pay anyone, but try to be fair, so here are our guidelines.

• You keep the rights to your work – you can repost wherever you like.  We like links back, they are not compulsory, but we do appreciate them.
• If we need to significantly edit your post, either before or after it goes on the site, we will run it past you first.    If, for some reason, major changes are urgently needed to a post that is public, it will be made private until you have approved the change. The only exception to this general rule is for formatting,  minor changes or spelling mistakes, and if you don’t like the corrections, you have the option of refusing them.  Most posts, unless arranged, spend some time between editing and publication, which gives us time to ensure that everyone is happy.
• Everything in your post is your opinion and responsibility.  You will never be asked to write anything that you don’t believe, and it is up to you to check that it is ok to use quotes, images and so on.
• Please make sure that everything you submit is yours and you own the copyright.
• The site currently makes no profit and nobody is paid.  If it starts to make money, we will advise contributors and give you the opportunity to change the terms of your contribution.
• If any money does come in, it will first be used to make basic improvements to the site before being counted as profit, but any contributor is free to see accounts and make recommendations.
• Everyone has the choice to back out at any time.  So, we might need to remove your post, but will let you know why.  You can ask us to remove your post at any point.  This applies at any point in the whole process.
• We will promote your post in any way we can, and we ask that you do so if possible.  The success of the site depends on everyone helping out, so please do share any posts that you find interesting with your contacts.
• You choose how you want to be credited – your real name or a user name.  This can also be changed at a later date, unless it somehow changes the point of your post, in which case you always have the option of withdrawing or editing the post.  If you do not provide an image in your writer profile, a randomly generated one will be used.
• You can link to your own blog, twitter, etc, and other sites but not to a direct paid referral link (i.e. where you will be paid for people clicking).
• Reposts from your own blog or other places are fine, although we do appreciate being told if a post has appeared elsewhere.
• If you have a personal link to a subject, or have received a free or discounted product for review, please let us know when you submit your post.  It may not be necessary to declare as part of the post, but we do need to be aware to safeguard the quality of the site.

Style Notes for Contributors

Unless otherwise arranged, contributions are to be around 750 words in length, in a chatty but informative magazine style.  Links to sources are appreciated, as are any appropriate images. We have now agreed that all posts are to be published with an accompanying image, so it makes things easier if you can provide one, although we can use a stock image if needed.

No diary style or overly personal posts please, and no talking down to the readers.  If you are unsure whether your contribution is suitable for the site, we are very happy to review and make suggestions so please drop us an email.

Bear in mind that The Camel’s Hump is aimed at the intelligent general reader – if you need to refer to specialist terms or concepts, please explain them.  We try to distribute subjects and styles over time if possible, so you have the best chance of making it on to the site quickly if you write about something we’ve not recentlycovered, or by bringing a new perspective to an ongoing debate.

Offensive and discriminatory contributions will not be accepted, but general swearing and rants are fine.

We prefer to receive contributions through the wordpress system, just ask to be approved, but can receive email submissions as well.

As the site develops, so will these guidelines – please check back from time to time to make sure you are happy with them. We will let you know if there are any major changes to be aware of.

Hopefully these rules are completely OTT, but it is always good to check what you are getting yourself into – enjoy!
